THE POETRY OF MATHEMATICS

the very antipodes of Poesy. Yet Mathesis and
Poesy are of the closest kindred, for they are both
works of the imagination. Poesy is a creation, a
making, a fiction; and the Mathematics have been
called, by an admirer of them, the sublimest and
most stupendous of fictions. It is true, they are not
only mathesis, learning, but poiesis, a creation. . . .

it is addressed to the head, and in the other, to the
heart."
